Dunnottar Castle – Sunday 1 February 2026

With a winter chill still in the air, we headed to Stonehaven where 7 brave walkers met at the outdoor swimming pool car park.

From here we walked down to the promenade and followed the board walk to Stonehaven Harbour. Having walked around the harbour, we then climbed steeply up a stairway getting great views of the harbour below. We followed the coastal cliff path with stunning views of Dunnottar Castle, sitting on a steep rocky promontory. Enroute we passed the war memorial on Black Hill, and it was just a short climb for those who wanted to get a closer look.

Once we reached the Castle, we looped inland towards Dunnottar Woods, crossing & walking along a short section of main road. We then followed a minor country road towards the woods & on arriving at a car park, followed the red trail, taking us past Lady Kennedy’s bath & the Shell House. We followed this track to the outskirts of Stonehaven & then walked through the town back to the cars.

This walk was over well defined tracks, apart from fairly short sections along roads & the walk through Stonehaven on paths, and took approximately 3 hours, and walking distance of 8km (5 miles).

Many thanks to Tony for leading the walk, and to Sheena for taking the group photo (other photos were taken on a previous walk in warmer climes).
